Partner Provider: HOU (in collaboration with EITM)
Through its on-site Biology Lab, Hellenic Open University (HOU) has been investing in the development of virtual and remote laboratories for providing hands-on experience in technical subjects to its students and trainees through distance learning. For this purpose, number of remote labs for STEM education and virtual labs named the Onlabs Virtual Laboratory have been designed and developed. Onlabs is a free-to-use educational 3D Virtual Environment simulating a workbench environment (currently chemistry and biology labs) and used for training students in making appropriate use of the laboratory equipment and conducting experiments.
In collaboration with EIT Manufacturing, HOU is delivering XRLabs, as the extension of the OnLabs to include additional machine processing tools for courses targeted to mechanical engineering (e.g. hydraulics labs) and manufacturing (e.g. handling of lathe machines etc.)
Expected impact:
- Reduce the cost of laboratory education
- Elevate lab education at-a-distance to at least the same level of learning effectiveness with on-site lab education
